No Cheering Allowed!

Posted by: Sai on: June 11, 2008

So I was watching the news one night and the news anchor starting talking about this high school graduation in South Carolina where cheering was not allowed. Seven people were actually arrested for disorderly conduct because they were cheering. The school principal said they think it’s important to have that student’s name heard as they cross the stage that’s why the disruptive guests were ‘removed.’ uhmm… is there anyone else out there who think this is ridiculous? Is it the gas price getting to their head? That must have been the saddest graduation ever.  And for those people to be arrested, isn’t that just a little extreme? I understand being chased out of the ceremony but to be locked up for clapping and whooping and cheering??? I mean, come one, is it really that bad?

I remember when I graduated (don’t ask me when), the university had all these rules about what we can and can’t do. Of course, nobody followed them. We still put our own little touches to that boring black cap and gown. Somebody brought beach balls and sound horns. Everyone had a ball, pun intended. And I’ll tell you this, nobody was paying attention to all the names that were said. People only cared about the ones they knew so they can cheer for them. It is an achievement and they’re proud and they’re showing it.
